China’s NATO (No Action - Talk Only)
Bessent's comments are indeed generating significant market reactions. The perception that he "reads" China in a particular way will likely prove that China's approach this weekend amounts to NATO ("No Action, Talk Only").
China's claim that they're considering US consumers and businesses seems disingenuous. The rhetoric from Chinese state media often comes across as self-aggrandizing. They appear to position themselves as saviors, which reflects a certain egotistical, ungenuine perspective and considerable projection in their communications.
This communication style may be unfamiliar to many readers, but it becomes recognizable with exposure. I also link this to linguistic differences - Chinese has approximately 85,000 words compared to English's 755,000, which also impacts expression.
When communicating with Asian counterparts, everything often needs to be literal and precise, lacking the nuance and symbolism present in other communication styles. More complex concepts get reduced to simplistic terms.
So this weekend - they met to agree to cut tariffs, but cutting on both sides could simply expand the deficit.
The Chinese Ministry of Finance commands significantly greater resources than the US Treasury.
Good for the communist - I guess.
