Invest in Ideas that Change the World
It’s June.
Markets are moving predictably.
Here is something interesting..
Tell me the thesis, and I’ll tell you if it will be a good book or not. I believe we should have a sense for this and, in theory, be able to work out the entire contents with our mind.
Many in this audience likely have high IQs and read all sorts of interesting things. The first editions books of significant works are assets you will likely appreciate.
What I do is look for ideas that can add to my understanding of the world and then consider if they are well-known or not. I evaluate whether they tell the truth about the world or if they are simply great bodies of work relative to price and demand. That is my telltale approach in the antiquarian book space.
A few years ago, I was in Milan speaking to my book dealer about acquiring all the works from some of my favorite thinkers that not everyone knows about. One person who comes to mind is Karl Popper, who popularized the idea of ‘falsification.’ In scientific literature, falsification implies that what distinguishes science from pseudoscience is the ability to be proven false. This concept became a bedrock of my understanding of the flaws in traditional technical analysis, which is unfalsifiable.
I also had her hunt for another gem from Friedrich List. His most notable work is “The National System of Political Economy,” in which he argued for the importance of national economic policies and the protection of nascent industries to foster economic development. I believe this work is foundational to most modern economies and inspired my explanation of Asian Capital Development.
Overall, it’s just a really interesting way to invest in ideas and identify those that could become more popular or rediscovered by investors and collectors, leading to future appreciation.
I recently saw that the resale of my book is now going for approximately $5,000. This indicates a few things. First, it shows that there are some real gems in it, which is great and demonstrates its ability to stand the test of time.
What’s interesting is I completely coded a more advanced version of the book on the website.
Second, it tells me that people haven’t been clicking the service section and contacting us regarding the IP and stock picks enough - what are you waiting for?
