The Highest Agency in a Multicultural Society Is Meeting the Hierarchy Head-On
Your work is measured relative to the highest bar, not relative to your background.
Your ideas must stand without disclaimers.
Your success cannot be explained away as representation.
Your failure cannot be softened by narrative.
And that is precisely why it forces a higher standard.
Everyone the public actually wants to see perform at the Super Bowl eventually gets canceled.
That’s not an accident. It’s a feature of the system.
True creativity doesn’t come from committees, compliance, or algorithmic safety. It comes from independent minds—people who can speak plainly, directly, and intelligibly to a mass audience without diluting themselves into niche tropes or exhausting the listener with performative signaling.
The best artists don’t fatigue you with assimilation theater.
They don’t hide behind coded subcultures either.
They translate something real into a language everyone can feel.
That tension is why I wrote this question a few weeks ago—and why it still matters now.
If someone is capable, intelligent, and ambitious inside a multicultural society, what path gives them the most agency?
Go deep into diaspora identity and make that the center of meaning
Reject diaspora identity as central and anchor into assimilation
Try to balance both without turning either into a performance
Centering diaspora identity can feel powerful at first.
It offers narrative gravity, instant community, and moral insulation.
But it also creates a ceiling.
When identity becomes the core product, the work no longer has to compete at the highest level—it only has to resonate within a protected lane.
Standards become internal.
Feedback loops narrow.
Over time, the work stops being measured against excellence and starts being measured against symbolism.
That path trades universality for insulation.
It produces visibility, not leverage.
Full assimilation looks like freedom, but it comes with a quieter constraint: permission.
Risk-taking shrinks.
Language gets sanded down.
You gain access—but lose authorship.
The ceiling here is approval.
The highest agency in a multicultural society does not come from leaning harder into identity, nor from disappearing into assimilation.
It comes from meeting the hierarchy head-on, speaking in a language everyone understands, and allowing your work—alone—to justify your presence.
That path is lonely.
It is slow.
And it is unforgiving.
But it’s the only one that creates art, ideas, and performances that people actually remember—and quietly wish they were allowed to see on the biggest stage.
