The Switch
A lot of well-known people speak about the idea of first principles. The issue arises when you see them change their stance on, say, politics—it does feel a bit concerning. Why? Because absolute truths or moral principles are supposed to be permanent and rooted in first principles. Yet, the process one—particularly someone in power—has to go through to arrive at those principles often leads to a lot of unnecessary trials and tribulations for society.
People are easily duped by making a “mountain out of a molehill” while remaining indifferent when it’s actually a mountain.
The only benefit I see is the ability to monetize this weakness in human nature as it pertains to markets. If you can think and live as a contrarian from all angles, it becomes incredibly valuable when applied to specific market scenarios.
